Burncoat Senior High School
Worcester, MassachusettsNotification method: Letter to Parents & Student Handbook 11th grade class: 4.6% opting out
12th grade class: 41.4% opting out
118 Grade 12 students out of 285 have opted out.
14 Grade 11 students out of 300 have opted out.
Grade 12 students at Burncoat High School registered the highest opt out percentage in Worcester, but at the same time, Burncoat’s Grade 11 recorded the lowest opt out percentage among grades 11 and 12 in the city. This raises serious concerns about the process and procedures used to notify and track requests at Burncoat. It is also important to note that Burncoat H.S. was one of the first to Worcester schools to allow a JROTC program.
No Grade 9 & 10 students recorded as opting out. Worcester Public Schools do not actively inform students/parents in Grades 9 & 10 of NCLB opt out, and have either chosen not to accept or track requests. NCLB only requires schools release Grades 11 and 12 contact information.
Worcester Public Schools use opt out forms that do not recognize that students are able to opt themselves out.
Worcester does not allow a standing opt out, but rather requires an opt out at the beginning of every school year.
WPS send opt out forms home to parents which are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.
